✏️ Little lines, familiar shapes and room for a child's own ideas.

First Lines & Shapes is a printable pre-writing book for children ages 3–5, with adult help as needed. Its 28 practice pages begin with large straight paths, then introduce curves, loops, zigzags, turns and basic shapes. Later pages give fewer tracing guides and more space to copy, complete pictures and draw freely.

Use these printable pre-writing worksheets for an optional short activity at home, a home-learning session or your own preschool classroom. The pages focus on pencil-control practice through lines and shapes, without formal letter drills, scores or required daily targets.

📥 Digital download only: one customer ZIP with A4 and US Letter PDF editions, a START-HERE printing guide and a use licence. No physical workbook, pencil or crayons are included.

What can children explore?

Choose a page that interests the child and let them set the pace. An adult can read the short instruction, demonstrate a stroke with a finger and offer a comfortable pencil or crayon.

  • Straight paths: trace broad vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines before trying a page with mixed straight strokes.
  • Curves and loops: explore roomy waves, wide arches, circles and flowing loops.
  • Zigzags and turns: follow wide zigzags, stepped corners, mountain paths and rounded bends.
  • Basic shapes: trace large circles, squares, triangles and rectangles, then use the blank box for a personal attempt.
  • Finish the picture: look at a worked stroke example, then trace rain lines, a snail shell, house roofs or wavy balloon strings.
  • Trace then copy: trace one example, try the version with fewer guide marks and draw in the final blank space.
  • Mixed motor practice: choose familiar paths, trace lines between matching pictures, turn a shape into a drawing and make favourite marks.

Clear tracing markers, with space to explore

A filled dot marks the start and an arrow shows the direction along the path. Open paths finish at an open circle. Closed shapes go around and return to their starting dot. The adult guide explains these markers before the practice pages begin.

The trace-then-copy section gradually reduces the guide marks. Blank areas are for the child's own attempts; drawings do not need to match the examples exactly. There is no answer key or assessment score.

Exactly what is included?

Each edition contains 32 pages: 28 practice pages and 4 support pages. Both paper sizes contain the same activities. The A4 and US Letter files are two layouts of the same book, rather than 64 different pages.

Section Pages per edition
Straight paths 4
Curves and loops 4
Zigzags and turns 4

The customer ZIP contains exactly four files:

  • Book_A4.pdf: the complete 32-page book, sized 210 × 297 mm.
  • Book_US-Letter.pdf: the complete 32-page book, sized 8.5 × 11 inches.
  • START-HERE.pdf: a one-page guide to choosing a file, printing and getting started.
  • Licence.txt: household or own-classroom use terms.

Who is this pre-writing book for?

  • Parents and caregivers offering short paper activities to a child who is starting to explore tracing and drawing.
  • Home-learning families looking for lines, curves and shape practice before formal letter worksheets.
  • Preschool teachers choosing printable practice pages for children in their own classroom.

The intended age range is 3–5, with adult help as needed. Age is a guide, not a test of what a child should be able to do. Review the real page previews, choose a comfortable starting point and skip or revisit activities as wanted.

The adult notes encourage optional short sessions, breaks and the child's preferred hand. They do not ask adults to force a particular grip or insist on exact copies. This is a practice resource and does not promise a particular developmental or handwriting outcome.

How to print and use the worksheets

  1. Download the customer ZIP to your device.
  2. Extract it so the four files can be opened.
  3. Choose the A4 or US Letter PDF to match your paper.
  4. Print and explore: select a few pages and print at Actual Size / 100%, one page per sheet.

Start with one test page to check the dotted tracing guides and page numbers. The interiors use white backgrounds and dark line art for low-ink home printing. Single-sided printing makes it easy to use individual sheets. Practice activities are on pages 4–31, and the optional keepsake certificate is on page 32.

You need a PDF reader, printer and your own pencil or crayon. No scissors, glue, AI subscription or paid design app is required. The files are flat printable PDFs, rather than editable templates or fillable forms.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these pre-writing worksheets for?

The intended age range is 3–5, with adult help as needed. The age band is a guide. Choose pages using the child's interest and the page previews, and stop or take a break whenever wanted.

How many practice pages are included?

There are 28 practice pages. Each 32-page edition also has 4 support pages: the cover, adult guide, contents and optional keepsake certificate. Both paper sizes contain the same activities.

What files will I receive?

One ZIP containing Book_A4.pdf, Book_US-Letter.pdf, START-HERE.pdf and Licence.txt. No physical book, Canva template, Word file or editable source file is included.

Does this book teach the alphabet?

No. It focuses on straight lines, curves, loops, zigzags, turns and basic shapes before formal letter practice. It does not include A–Z tracing drills or phonics lessons.

Are start dots and direction arrows included?

Yes. A filled dot marks the start and an arrow shows the direction. Open paths end at an open circle. Closed shapes return to the same starting dot. The adult guide explains the markers.

What does trace then copy mean?

The child first traces an example, then tries a version with fewer guide marks, and finally uses a blank practice space. The section includes straight strokes, curves, zigzags and familiar shapes. Copies do not need to be exact.

Are answers or scores included?

No. The activities are tracing practice and open-ended drawing, so there are no scored answer pages or answer key. The adult guide and picture-page stroke examples explain how to use the activities.

Does my child need to read independently?

No. An adult can read the short instructions and show a movement with a finger. The tracing paths, start markers and picture examples provide visible guidance.

How do I print the pencil-control workbook?

Extract the ZIP, open the PDF matching your paper and select Actual Size / 100%, one page per sheet. Print one test page first to check the guides. A4 and US Letter have separate native layouts.

Can I print only a few pages or repeat a page?

Yes. Select individual pages in your PDF reader. Practice pages are on pages 4–31. Repeat printing is allowed within the included household or own-classroom licence.

Can I use the book in my preschool classroom?

The included licence covers one household OR one teacher's own classroom. It permits repeat printing within that scope. Sharing digital files with other teachers, shared-drive uploads, school-wide use, redistribution and resale are not included.

Do I need a special pencil or a particular hand grip?

No particular drawing tool or grip is required by this book. Offer a comfortable pencil or crayon and let the child use their preferred hand. The adult notes encourage short optional sessions and breaks.

Are the PDFs editable, fillable or made for tablet tracing?

No. These are finished, flat printable PDFs intended for paper use. No editable source files, interactive tablet activity, AI prompts or design-app subscription are included.
