Printable geography activities for young map explorers

Read a map key, follow a north arrow and find places on a letter-number grid. The World Explorer Map & Geography Activity Book is a printable PDF book for children ages 6–9, with adult reading help as needed. It combines fictional town maps, introductory world geography and short clue-based challenges for families, home learning and a teacher's own classroom.

Each edition contains 32 activity pages, 6 answer pages and 4 support pages — 42 pages in total. A4 and US Letter editions contain identical activities in layouts made for the two paper sizes.

Start with symbols, then combine the clues

Children begin by reading simple map symbols and making their own map. Later map skills worksheets introduce compass directions, grid references and route planning. The final review pages combine a key, directions and coordinates in one challenge. Choose a few pages at a time, read new words aloud and talk through the clues together.

Section Pages What is inside
Map keys 4–7 Read symbols in fictional towns and create a map with a matching key.
Compass directions 8–11 Use north, south, east and west to locate places and follow steps.
Grid references 12–15 Find places using a column letter followed by a row number.
Land and water 16–19 Match and compare mountains, rivers, lakes and islands.
Continents and oceans 20–23 Study original simplified maps using a stated seven-continent and five-ocean model.
Habitats around the world 24–27 Match animal and habitat records using information printed on the page.
Route planning 28–31 Follow directions, compare route lengths in blocks and solve route clues.
Explorer review 32–35 Combine map keys, directions and square references.

Answers and adult notes are on pages 36–41. The four support pages are the cover, adult print/use guide, contents and optional explorer keepsake.

Clear conventions for every map puzzle

North points up on the activity maps. Read a grid's column letter first, then its row number; A1 is the bottom-left square. Route blocks count the lines between letters, rather than real-world distances. Towns and routes are fictional.

The world geography section uses Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America as its seven continents. The five ocean names are Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern. The adult guide notes that other courses can use different continent conventions. The original world outlines are coarse schematics with small islands and country borders omitted.

Habitat tasks provide their own animal records. They use broad examples such as savanna, tropical forest, dry desert and Antarctic sea-ice breeding habitat, without implying that a species lives in only one place.

Who it is for

  • Parents and caregivers: explore paper maps, symbols and clues together.
  • Home learning: choose short sessions with printable geography puzzles and map tasks.
  • Teachers: print selected world geography activities for children ages 6–9 in their own classroom.

An adult can explain unfamiliar vocabulary and help choose an appropriate starting page. Drawing tasks can have many valid responses, and no field trip is required.

Frequently asked questions

1. What age is this geography activity book for?

It is intended for ages 6–9, with adult help as needed. An adult can read instructions, explain new words and choose pages suited to the child's experience.

2. Which files will I receive?

The ZIP contains Book_A4.pdf, Book_US-Letter.pdf, START-HERE.pdf and Licence.txt. The PDFs are for printing; editable source files and fillable forms are not included.

3. How many pages are included?

Each edition has 42 pages: 32 activity pages, 6 answer pages and 4 support pages. A4 and US Letter contain the same content in different paper-size layouts.

4. Which geography activities are inside?

The eight sections cover map keys, compass directions, grid references, land and water, continents and oceans, habitats, route planning and an explorer review.

5. Are answers included?

Yes. Six pages give answers and adult notes for the closed tasks, including route reasoning and grid references. Creative map drawings have many valid answers.

6. Which continent and ocean models does the book use?

It uses seven continents, with Australia as the continent name, and five oceans including the Southern Ocean. The adult guide acknowledges different educational conventions. Europe and Asia share a landmass, and the Pacific appears at both edges of the world map.

7. How are grid references read?

Use the column letter followed by the row number, such as B3. The columns run left to right and the rows run bottom to top, so A1 is the bottom-left square. North points up on the activity maps.

8. Does my child need to know animal habitats already?

No. The habitat section supplies short animal and habitat records. Children match the information on the page; the examples do not imply that each species uses only one habitat.

9. How do I print the book? Do I need colour ink or a paid app?

Use a PDF reader and choose the file matching your paper. Test at 100% / Actual Size, one page per sheet. Black-and-white printing is suitable. No paid design app or AI subscription is needed.

10. Can I use it in my classroom?

One teacher may print it for their own classroom. One household may use the purchase at home instead. School-wide and multiple-classroom use are not included.

11. May I reprint the activities?

Yes, for the household or teacher's own classroom covered by the purchase. Keep the digital files private and follow Licence.txt. Sharing, redistribution and resale are not permitted.

12. Is a physical book included, and what if the ZIP will not open?

This is a digital product only. Download and extract the ZIP before opening an individual PDF in a PDF reader. START-HERE.pdf explains how to choose the paper size and print a test page.
